School's Out For Summer!
7/24/24
The minute school lets out for the summer, all rules/expectations go out the window right? Summer is the perfect time to recharge our minds and bodies after a long school year of hard work. While summer is often full of fun in the sun, keeping a structured routine at home is the key to a more relaxed, enjoyable summer. It also allows for a much smoother transition back to school in the Fall. Changes in routine cause disruptions, which can often lead to heightened emotions and behavioral issues. Although summer schedules are likely going to be more relaxed, children benefit greatly from routine and here are a few reasons why.
1. Bedtime
A good night’s sleep is important at any age, but it is essential for the healthy development of children and adolescents. When we alter our sleeping patterns, it can negatively impact our mood, energy levels, and ability to focus. Making it more challenging to get through the day in a productive way. While it may be tempting to let your child stay up later because they do not have to get up early the next day for school, keep in mind that our mind and body operate best when on a consistent routine. A regular sleep routine promotes better sleep. And as many of you have experienced, better sleep equals a happier more flexible child. Plus, you do not have to worry about getting your child “back on track” before school starts back up again. You will likely have nights where staying up past bedtime is inevitable, and that’s ok. Just do the best that you can to keep your child’s sleep routine as consistent as possible!
2. Mealtime
Summer can be full of adventures, making it easy to lose track of time! It is likely you are having so much fun that you forget to prioritize mealtime. Your child may be participating in a camp, making some of this out of your control. Try your very best to plan ahead to avoid a “hangry” child. Food is the necessary fuel that keeps our kids happy, healthy and thriving!
3. Household responsibilities
Continue to prioritize household responsibilities. Summer is the perfect time to clean out that garage you have been meaning to clean. Or plant that garden you have always desired. Just because school is out, does not mean all responsibilities disappear. Encourage your child to contribute to the family unit by taking on age appropriate responsibilities. Providing your child with an opportunity to actively contribute to the family unit can help improve their self-esteem. Make it a team effort! Work towards “family goals” to encourage cooperation and collaboration. It’s always more motivating to complete a daily chore, right before that ice cream trip or fun activity you had planned as a family!
Most importantly, be kind to yourself. Things may not go as planned and that is ok! It is actually expected! There will be nights that bedtime is pushed back and meals are given on the go. Try to practice self-compassion and remind yourself that you are doing the best that you can. And remember, summer can still be enjoyable even with squeezing in a chore or two into the daily routine!
