Top 10 Self-Esteem Boosters
7/20/21
From time to time, everyone struggles with self-esteem. However, there are so many ways to address our inner critic and instead become our biggest cheerleader. We owe it to ourselves to actively insert positive energy into our world. Here are some quick and easy self-esteem boosters for all ages!
1. Surround yourself with positive influences
Surround yourself with people who bring you up rather than drag you down. Have people in your life that accept you for who you are, the good and the bad. At times it may feel important to fit in and follow the latest trends. However, being accepted for your true self is much more meaningful. I always like to say “quality over quantity!”
2. Set a small, attainable goal
It can be so defeating when we do not meet our goals. Try setting a daily goal that is attainable and realistic, for better results and less disappointment. Track your progress in a journal, an app, or a whiteboard/chalkboard in your room. Visual reminders are key!
3. Ride the wave
Some days will be better than others but that is okay. Always remember, it is okay to not be okay sometimes. Tomorrow is a brand new day. With that said, actively pursue activities and support that will lift you up in your lowest moments.
4. Affirm yourself daily with positive self-talk
When we criticize ourselves over every little detail, we may be making the situation worse (and creating our own negative feelings). Things may not always go as planned, but it is important to find the good in everything we do and experience. A gratitude journal can really help, as we focus on what positives occurred one day at a time. Another idea (super fun!) is to write post-it notes to yourself and hang on a mirror or surface you see often. Read them aloud, as a necessary daily reminder of your self-worth.
5. Remind yourself what your body is capable of doing
We often forget our body’s strengths and take them for granted. Think of all the things you are lucky to be able to do. This can even be as simple as walking and talking. Our bodies are capable of amazing things that permit us to experience many of the great things this world has to offer.
6. Do something new that scares you
Proving to ourselves that we can meet a new challenge can be very empowering. Overcoming our fears allows us to build genuine confidence. Instead of saying “I cannot do this” try saying “I will never know until I try!”
7. Give back
Giving back to others provides us a sense of worth and gratitude. Volunteer your time for causes that matter to you. Feeling appreciated by others can introduce a new appreciation for ourselves.
8. Limit social media
Social media has a way to make us feel insignificant and inferior. Avoid comparing yourself to the unrealistic ideals that social media portrays. Remember, things are not always as they seem.
9. Accept your imperfections
Your hair, your outfit, your performance etc. does not always have to be perfect. Sometimes we overestimate how much others are noticing these details, when it is really us overthinking. All we can do is try our best and accept ourselves for who we are.
10. Respect yourself the way you respect others
Never say something to yourself that you would not say to someone else. For example, if you said to yourself “I am ugly”, stop and think - would you call someone else ugly? Be kind to yourself!
